Legionnellosis is a potentially fatal infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus legionnella present in the environment. It can take two clinical forms: lung infection or Legionnaires Disease characterized by high temperatures and pneumonia, and the Pontiac Disease, with milder respiratory illness and acute fever events.
Infection can originate in hospitals or community environments, where it can be associated to premises, equipments or installations. It can be detected in foci or sporadic cases. Legionnella contaminated installations which can be identified as the source of infections are both hot and cold sanitary water piping and cooling evaporation condensators, such as cooling towers in health care centres, hotels or other building types.
Laboratorio Echevarne is certified and accredited according to UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025: 2005 (CGA-ENAC-LEC), to perform Legionella counts and identification of Legionella pneumophila following assay procedures described in UNE-EN ISO 11731: for drinking water and untreated water not destined for consumption.
