Over 25.000 cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed in Spain every year, making it the second leading cause of cancer death and the most common cancer type in the developed world. Early detection of colorectal cancer means better response to treatment with survival rates of over 90% if the disease is detected in phase I. Colonoscopy is currently the most effective test although it represents a highly invasive screening method. Occult blood in stool is an accessible alternative but it needs strict sampling conditions and often leads to a high number of false positives. The new blood test overcomes these invasive or inaccurate screening methods.
TECHNIQUE FOR SEPT9 GENE DETECTION

This test identifies tumors in their initial phase with a degree of specificity and sensitivity superior to any other method currently available (Phase I: 50%; Phase II and III: 75%; Phase IV: 98%). A positive result implies presence of the marker in the patient’s plasma. A negative result in absence of clinical signs can be repeated every two years.
The protocol in Echevarne is fully automated from DNA extraction and warrants traceability and safety during the whole process.
